Hashtag Girl Crush July 2017 Review

UPDATE 11/08/2017: I was trying to buy the August 2017 Hashtag Girl Crush box in July, however the box was showing as ‘Sold Out’ on their website. After emailing Hashtag Girl Crush, I was informed by someone in their team that the monthly beauty subscription box has been discontinued. As of today I cannot access their website with an error message stating ‘www.hashtagirlcrush.com’s server DNS address could not be found.’ I have removed links to their website from this review, but will keep my eye out to see if the website comes back up. I hope you still enjoy my review xx.

Hello and Welcome!

I hope you’re doing well! Today I will be reviewing the July edition to Hashtag Girl Crush, which arrived on my doorstep earlier in the day!

For those of you who didn’t ready my June Hashtag Girl Crush review (you can find a link to that review here), and have never heard about this subscription box, I’ll give you a quick rundown on who they are. Hashtag Girl Crush is a monthly box that is composed of women-owned brands, additionally, they donate 10% of their profits to women’s charities. The box costs £20 and but their website states you will ‘receive at least 5 fashion, beauty and lifestyle products worth up to £150’. The purchase of the box works one month in advance, so if you paid for your first box in July, it would be posted on the 15th August.

In my July box I received the following products (prices stipulated are taken from each company’s individual website):

  • Sadler Jones ‘Escape Plans Notebook Set’ – £6.50
  • Boozi Bodycare ‘Pina Colada Hand Cream’ – £3.95
  • Optiat travel sized ‘Vanilla Velvet’ Coffee Scrub (90g) – £6.99
  • You Dirty Scrub ‘Mint & Eucalyptus Vegan Bath Salts’ (50g) – £5.99 for 200g so 50g is worth roughly £1.50 (although you can only buy this product in 200g bags)
  • Bloomtown Botanicals ‘The Rose Garden’ ‘Roll-On Infused Oil’ – £4.80
  • Nikki Strange ‘Fleur Floral Botanique Wellness Planner/Organiser’ – £7.00

Total product price – £30.74
Whilst the Hashtag Girl Crush website does stipulate that the products you receive will be worth UP TO £150, I can’t help being disappointed that the value of my box this month is only around £30.74. Especially as the value of my box last month was roughly £85, and I won’t use some of these products.

Okay so let’s get cracking and delve into each of these products!

Sadler Jones ‘Escape Plans Notebook Set’ – £6.50

First up we have these beautiful notebooks from Sadler Jones. One notebook is half marble and half a dusty pink with ‘notes’ in golden text, and the other is a black and white leaf patterned book with golden lettering that reads ‘Escape Plans’. Each of them contains 40 pages, with the marble/pink one being blank pages, and the ‘Escape Plans’ one having lined pages.

Now I’m one of those people who buys stationary because it’s pretty, even though I have no use for it so I welcome these as additions to my ridiculous hoard of stationary. That being said, I don’t actually have a use for these, and I tend to avoid getting notebooks with blank pages. Additionally, 40 pages is really not a lot of paper and I know if I were to use these for work then I’d get through them really quickly.

For £6.50 I think these notebooks are really cute, I wish the marble and pink one had lined paper instead of blank paper, and honestly I don’t think that I will use these – and if I do then it will only be the ‘Escape Plans’ one. If you like the notebooks, or want to check out what other styles that Sadler Jones has then you can check them out here.

Boozi Bodycare ‘Pina Colada Hand Cream’ – £3.95

This product is a Pina Colada hand cream scented with pineapple and coconut (in true Pina Colada style) and is marketed on the Boozi Bodycare website as having a ‘lightweight texture’ and being ‘non-greasy’. This product was also given the Silver Award at the 2014 Pure Beauty Awards (you can read a full article about that on the Boozi Bodycare website here).

The packaging of this is nice and I was drawn to it when I saw it in the box, however unfortunately the bottle is a little bit dented which is annoying but not unforgivable. I personally always forget to use hand cream and I find that a lot of hand creams don’t absorb fast enough for my liking. I don’t tend to reach for hand creams often and own a load of them so this isn’t a product that I’d be likely to use. I did unscrew the cap to give it a smell and it definitely smells like Pina Colada, but it’s very, very sweet-smelling.

For £3.95 I think this product is bargain! I think this would make a great gift for someone (they have different booze scented products, as well as different types of products scented with Pina Colada) – I’m just unsure how much I will use it. If you want to get yourself one of these, or check out other products by Boozi Bodycare then you can do this on their website.

Optiat travel sized ‘Vanilla Velvet’ Coffee Scrub (90g) – £6.99

The description on the Optiat website for this product is as follows: ‘Scrub up silky smooth for a blissful night in. Made using a blend of used Arabica coffee grounds and vanilla extract, our Vanilla Velvet helps you relax and unwind after a long day. The coffee grounds act as a natural exfoliator, whilst the caffeine stimulates blood flow, effective against cellulite and stretch marks’.

I was very excited to see this product in my Hashtag Girl Crush box. I’ve tried a coffee scrub from Grounded Body Scrub before which came in a brown resealable packet and I loved it. I find coffee scrubs make me feel clean and awake, and I really love the smell of coffee so that’s a bonus! However, with the Grounded Body Scrub, I found that water would get into the bag and make it clog so I absolutely love that this product is in a squeezy tube, it will make using it so much easier, and for £6.99 it’s really well priced compared to other coffee scrubs.

I cannot wait to use this product! I’m really glad that I got the vanilla version of the scrub as I love vanilla (and I always order Vanilla Lattes, so vanilla and coffee is definitely my kind of smell)! This product also comes in larger bottles, and in different scents including Lemongrass, Mandarin, and Peppermint. If you’d like to purchase this product, or a different version of the scrub then you can find all of the products here.

You Dirty Scrub ‘Mint & Eucalyptus Vegan Bath Salts’ (50g) – Roughly £1.50

The name of this brand really amuses me, I feel like if anyone asked me what I was using it would sound like I was insulting them. Either way I love anything to do with bathing so I liked the look of this product. The description on this brand’s Etsy account is that ‘You Dirty Scrub Mint & Eucalyptus Bath Salts are the perfect way to relax after a long day’ and the ‘Himalayan Rock Salt and Dead Sea Salt will then get to work drawing toxins from the body whilst relieving muscle stress as well as aches and pains’, finally ‘as an added bonus, the Almond Oil we have added will nourish and hydrate the skin meaning our bath salts don’t just finish their job when you step out of the bath.’

Personally I think this sounds like a perfect combination, and I’m very excited by this product. I’m glad that it’s a bath product, rather than a shower one, as the packaging is similar to the Grounded Body Scrub’s packaging that I mentioned and it’s really difficult to keep the product inside dry. The only tiny criticism that I have with this item is that you don’t get very much product, and I’m sure I’ll use this up in no time.

If you’d like to buy this product, and check out You Dirty Scrub’s other products, then you can do so through their Etsy account.

Bloomtown Botanicals ‘The Rose Garden’ ‘Roll-On Infused Oil’ – £4.80

So this product is a little weird for me, the Bloomtown Botanicals website instructs to ‘apply to pulse points for an instant pick-me-up. Skin-loving plant oils nourish skin without clogging pores, perfect for smoothing dry patches and applying to split ends, too!’

I’ve only used roll-on oils a couple of times to help stress relief but they tend to give me migraines, especially if I put them on before bed. Therefore I’m really fearful of this product, and will not be using it. Personally I also do not like the smell of rose which, although it’s not overpowering, this smells of. Instead I will be putting this in my giveaway pile.

We are all different and have unique bodies and needs so if you think that this Bloomtown Botanicals roll-on oil is something that you would use (it comes in 6 different scents), then you can buy this product on their website here.

Nikki Strange ‘Fleur Floral Botanique Wellness Planner/Organiser’ – £7.00

I always look at these types of planners but I’ve never got round to buying one so I was interested when this came with my box, plus it looks really beautiful. On the website, the description for the planner is: ‘with life being so hectic and busy for us all, we know how hard it can be to make time for oneself and to slow down and reflect. With this planner we hope to help you break down your schedules & ensure some ‘Me’ time in the most fun and inspiring way. Whether you’re into yoga, meditation, pottery, rock climbing or singing, use this planner to help schedule more time for the things you love.’

The idea behind these types of planners is great, and this planner has different sections entitled ‘things to do this week’, ‘reflective mood’, ‘don’t forget’, ‘things to do that make me happy’ (which is broken into two sections for ‘listen’ and ‘read’), ‘personal goals/me time’ (which has each day of the week on it, and a section for something new to do that week), and ‘this week’s mantra’.

Everytime I see these planners I always want to use one, but I know that I wouldn’t keep it up. I’ve tried keeping gratitude journals, migraine journals, and many other things similar to this planner, and it always lasts a couple of days before I forget about it, or it starts to feel like a chore. So if I’m being totally, and completely honest to myself, I’m 90% sure I will not use this which is a shame (but I’ll keep telling myself that I’ll use it).

If you want to purchase this planner, or a planner similar then you can check out this one, and all other products, on the Nikki Strange website here.

Overall I personally think this month’s Hashtag Girl Crush box was very hit and miss. The products that I will use, or try, are: the Sadler Jones ‘Escape Plans Notebook Set’, the Boozi Bodycare ‘Pina Colada Hand Cream’, the Optiat travel sized ‘Vanilla Velvet’ Coffee Scrub, and the You Dirty Scrub ‘Mint & Eucalyptus Vegan Bath Salts’ (50g). Which means the total amount of the products in this box that I will use is roughly £18.94 – meaning that this month the items I will use were worth less than I paid for the box (£20), making it not value for money. Please remember that this is my personal opinion, and if someone else received this exact box, it may suit them better, additionally each box is different. Furthermore, some of these products (particularly the coffee scrub, and the bath salts) I really love and will purchase the full-sized product of, and I love that Hashtag Girl Crush include many products that are natural, organic, or vegan.

This brings us to the end of my review of the Hashtag Girl Crush July 2017 beauty box. I hope you enjoyed reading it, if you did then be sure to give it a ‘like’ and comment below with your thoughts!

Love,

Charlotte (Multibendystraw)

  1. I was disappointed in the July line-up. I got almost the same as you, including the dented handcream. I also got the tiniest bikini ever which might fit a child if you wanted her to look completely inappropriate. 😑

    1. I was disappointed with the total price for the products. In my first box (June) my total box price was around £80 so it was a bit weird to me that the value of this box was so low!
So strange that your hand cream was also dented, I assumed it was just mine!
I don’t wear bikinis so glad I didn’t get that, especially if it was a really tiny size
